RANCH LIFE! North Fork is part of the XL Ranch, a working cattle ranch and small grain operation. The ranch headquarters (six miles east of North Fork) is in the scenic White Earth Valley. The Valley has a very colorful history: one mile north of the ranch is Battle Hill, site of a former Indian village and battle between the Souix and Assinaboine Indian tribes. The White Earth Valley has a quality and beauty that in many ways has remained undamaged over the years. Much of the valley looks the way it did when Lewis and Clark traveled through it in 1805. The White Earth Dam is also located a half mile from the ranch. the White Earth River flows into the Missouri River (Lake Sakakawea) about 20 miles south of North Fork. lake Sakakawea is noted for its excellent walleye fishing.
